Summary
The issue and concern about seniors behind the wheel must be put into proper perspective. More than one-half of Canadians aged 65 and over living in private households (over two million) are driving a car, minivan or truck. Seniors in small towns and rural areas are more likely to be drivers. This is not surprising considering that small towns and rural areas often have little or no public transportation or special-needs transportation and their residents tend to live farther from basic amenities. To maintain their independence in everyday activities such as shopping and getting to personal appointments, seniors must rely more heavily on their vehicles.
