Still, Manitoba's 4.7 per cent rate was tied for second lowest in Canada with Saskatchewan and British Columbia, trailing only Alberta's 3.6 per cent.

University of Manitoba economist John McCallum called Manitoba's unemployment rate jump "an incredible number."

"You're not going to have the kind of economy you really want with employment growth and labour force growth at half of Canada's," he said.
