Judge Rejects Application to Evict Widow From Her Home

Summary


Shortly after [Samuel Bunnie]'s death, the Sakimay band council began trying to evict Gratia Bunnie because, although she had been married to a band member, she herself was not a member of Sakimay.

"Sakimay has never approved or denied her application for membership and Sakimay has not provided an explanation for not doing so," the decision stated. "Membership is clearly critical to the decision regarding allocation of the housing units."

"I don't know whether to laugh or cry and yet at the same time I just felt that all that I wanted to do was sleep," she said during a phone interview on July 30. "It's been a long, hard road."
