Katz Backs Giving Share of Sales Tax to Municipalities

MAYOR Sam Katz said he loves Tory Leader Hugh McFadyen's plan to share the provincial sales tax with cities, but stopped short of throwing his considerable political heft behind McFadyen in the looming election.

Instead, he hinted that he's hoping McFadyen's trial balloon prompts other provincial politicians -- mostly Premier Gary Doer -- to match the promise and commit stable, long-term funding to fixing roads and bridges.

"What I would do is support the idea," said Katz when asked whether he would endorse McFadyen in a provincial race widely expected this spring. "I like to see everything on the table before I make a decision."
