Unfortunately, the idea of linking a hotel tax in the Wheat City to the operations or capital costs of the Keystone Centre was never fully developed during the debate that did go on in Brandon - before Mayor Dave Burgess and a narrow majority of city councillors used their power to cut off any further debate at a council meeting last August. Seeing the opportunity that existed for his chronically underfunded facility, Keystone Centre general manager Dan Robertson did speak in favour of the hotel tax to councillors, but his voice was overwhelmed by the chorus of voices from local hoteliers who, in our view, didn't make the most convincing case as to why this was a bad idea for Brandon.
