Knife Attack On Officer Nets 10-Year Sentence

Summary

[Vianna Redhead] grew up in Shamattawa, which [Brenda Keyser] notes has 90 per cent unemployment and is rife with "gas- and glue-sniffing and violence." Redhead's mother killed her father when she was just three years old. She was sexually abused by her stepfather and watched as her sister killed her common-law husband. Redhead was physically assaulted in foster care and, while she was in jail, learned her boyfriend had drowned.

Police were called to a Kennedy Street apartment after Redhead's sister phoned 911 saying she was being threatened with a knife. Officers went in through an unlocked door and found Redhead hiding around a corner, clutching the weapon. Redhead immediately lunged at one of the officers.

"This was a deliberate, premeditated and planned attack," Crown attorney Melinda Murray told court. "Had that blade gone half an inch higher, the officer quite possibly would have been killed and we'd be here on a first-degree murder case."
