Harold Jantz describes evangelicals as people "involved in centres of service", as "your neighbours and mine in every area of life", as ones who "place particular emphasis on conversion to Christ, trust in the Bible as the authoritative source for faith and life, a sense of urgency about witnessing to their faith and a belief that it is in the death and resurrection of Christ that human salvation will ultimately be found." Living by these principles in love and compassion is not what makes Jesus a "dirty word".
Jantz fails to address the reality that some evangelical Christians live by these principles in fear and intolerance, and, from a framework of fear and intolerance have equated Christianity with America's invasion of Iraq and propagated myths that homosexual marriages threaten heterosexual marriages, immigrants should adopt our customs or go elsewhere, reinstating prayer in the school will eliminate violence, God votes Republican or Conservative and women should be best known for their work in the kitchen. It may be that this group of evangelicals are in a minority, but they seem to be making a lot of noise and likely are the ones making Jesus a "dirty word".Letters to the Editor
