Amish normally use steel wheels on buggies and farm equipment because a rubber cushion would separate them from the earth. "Amish are never to lose touch with the earth," [Tom Shachtman]'s book explains.

An Amish minister arrived a short time later, one of the three men walking across the field. Can a person join an Amish community? It's rare, and Amish do not proselytize, he said. However, someone could join if his decision were based on doctrine and religion, and not just lifestyle.

* A person is shunned if they have chosen to be baptized as an Amish and then don't abide by the Amish beliefs. You cannot be shunned if you have not been baptized. The Amish support shunning with several Biblical quotes, such as Matthew 18:15-17.

Amish settlers arrive in Manitoba prepared to live off the grid and at a slower pace

NEAR PLUMAS -- Three men walk abreast across a wide prairie field. Why does this seem such a strange sight?

It takes them five to 10 minutes to cross the field, but it seems longer. Their features come into focus as they draw near: All have long frizzy beards, dark pants with suspenders, long-sleeved shirts on a hot day, and wide-brimmed straw hats.

In other words, they look as if their time machine just crashed and no one's told them it's 150 years in the future.

It's not so much the clothes they're wearing. It's that you just don't see people walking...
