It is also important to note that Winnipeg's business tax is an anomaly among the majority of other cities. A business tax does not exist in Saskatoon and Brandon, while Regina recently completed a three-year plan to eliminate its tax. Yet these cities all continue to provide the essential services to residents while at the same time growing their economic base as businesses grow and expand.
No one is suggesting that elimination of the business tax can be done overnight. It would be foolish to think otherwise. A reasonable and focused plan to phase out the business tax over a multi-year time frame would create a more positive environment for businesses throughout Winnipeg. Small businesses simply want certainty so they can develop and act on their own plans. And while the majority of mayoral candidates agree that the elimination of the business tax is doable and necessary, you can forgive the small business owners for holding the applause until they see the details.See the full content of this document
