The NDP's winning formula is built almost entirely on Doer's steady hand, and his man-of-the-people brand of personal politics. He's highly visible, from his East Side seat at Bomber games to Broadway hotdog stands. He's also genuinely seen as the kind of guy you'd like to have a beer with. Even the most talented MLAs know they won their seats largely on the strength of Doer's popularity. After 20 years at the party's helm and nearly a decade running the government, the party IS Doer. It's dominated by dozens of people who are fiercely loyal to him, nothing gets done unless Doer is on side and cabinet ministers don't always have a chance to shine.
