Summary
The other guest in the boat was a long-time visitor to this part of the world. Carl loved to fish with spoons, and over the course of nineteen years on this lake, he knew that large spoons usually produced the bigger fish. I am a firm believer of changing things, so while Carl stuck to his spoons, I switched over to a Rapala Super Shad, firetiger in pattern. After taking off the trebles and replacing it with a single barbless hook, I fired the bait out about 30 metres behind the boat.
As I slowly let out this weird contraption, [Ovide]'s eyes were riveted on the sideplanner. In his thirty years of guiding he had never had a guest use such a contraption. After about ten minutes, the sideplanner jumped backwards and dipped below the surface of the lake. Quickly indicating to Ovide that I had a fish on, I reeled the sideplanner to the back of the boat, allowing Ovide to take device off my line so I could fight the fish unhindered. A couple of minutes later I had a plump, brightly coloured laker in the net.The day I was in Lac Brochet, Ovide and Carl found the lake trout in a river mouth in the remote southeast section of Nueltin Lake. Carl caught and released seven lake trout over Master Angler size; the largest measuring 47 inches and weighing in at more than 40 pounds. That day is one of the reasons Carl will come back for another 19 years to northern Manitoba!See the full content of this document
