Low nickel prices take toll on Sudbury.

Slumping nickel prices impacted mining in the Sudbury basin during 2015 as the metal hit a multi-year low of US$3.75 a pound late November.

Nickel prices were blamed by First Nickel for shuttering its Lockerby Mine, laying off more than 160.

KGHM placed its McCreedy West Mine on care and maintenance in October with nickel prices hovering around US$4.45 a pound.

Laurentian University management professor Jean-Charles Cachon said with a slowdown in China's growth, there's an oversupply of most metals, including nickel.
