Summary


"They won the most basketball games ever by a team with Winnipeggers on it," said [Mark Spencer], noting that the Games' other sporting events were soccer -- the team with Winnipeg athletes placed eighth out of over 20 squads -- and tennis.

"We had the team selected by mid-January," explained Spencer, adding that the Games are held annually at different host sites -- generally in two or three cities. "Then, we began training. The kids have their own training routine, supplemented with fitness conditioning. As a group, they'd do circuit training and cardiovascular work once a week on top of their practices for the specific sport."

"The kids stay with host families, usually four to a family," said Spencer, adding there were also social activities for the young people with both their host families and for the entire gathering. "Not all of the athletes are from the same delegation.
