EDMONTON NEEDS OIL CHANGE: Looks like Craig MacTavish's days in Edmonton could be over. Mac T's Oilers missed the post-season. Again. In this era when NHL head coaches are replaced more often than toilet paper rolls, we've admired Kevin Lowe's loyalty to his old teammate. But given the Oilers' late-season collapse, losing four of their last five at home, it's time for new blood behind the bench.
DUCK, DUCK, BLUES (OR PREDS): This is odd man out, but it's not child's play. Still, you can't help notice that the head coaches of the three teams desperately vying for the final two playoff spots in the NHL's Western conference all have Manitoba roots; Anaheim's Randy Carlyle, former Moose GM/head coach, St. Louis Blue's Andy Murray, of Souris and Nashville's Barry Trotz, of Dauphin.ANGEL IN THE BULLPEN: Finally, on a much more serious note... we didn't drag up Craig MacTavish's past without good reason. On Thursday night, top Los Angeles Angels pitching prospect Nick Adenhart, along with two others, were killed by a suspected drunk driver only hours after the 22-year-old recorded his first major league victory.Mactavish Must Go... And Assorted Observations
And now some short observations for a long weekend that remind us once again that the world of sports is littered with hard choices, triumph, adversity, the trivial and the tragic. You know, not unlike life itself...
