"It's a very affordable sport and doesn't require a lot of travel or equipment maintenance," says Wilderness Supply's store manager Dawn Richardson. "The great thing about snowshoeing is that you can just strap them on and go. There are all kinds of great places where you can go in and around the city -- The Forks, city parks, Birds Hill Park -- for a trek."

"If you're planning on going into softer snow, you want a back country shoe, which will have more loft. That will help you stay on top of the snow so you can move more quickly," she explains. "Others are ideal for mountain snowshoeing due to their heel lift and more aggressive crampons. They also have bindings that can pack flat in backpacks for improved storage."
