Summary
Manitoba's strong June performance was a continuation of a trend that has seen it emerge as one of the country's leaders in payroll employment and earnings growth in the first half of 2008. That's a welcome change from the previous five years, when it often lagged most other provinces in both categories.
While Manitoba still had the fourth-lowest earnings among the provinces in June, at $730.54, it has been closing the gap this year with some of the provinces that were ahead of it. In fact, it passed one of them -- New Brunswick -- in June.StatsCan said Manitoba's payroll employees were earning an average of $730.54 a week in June, compared to $720.65 in May.
