Middle East Awaits Next American President

Summary

[John McCain] and Obama have very different visions of the Middle East. Their biggest differences are on Iran and Iraq. The U.S. military intervention in Iraq remains the most divisive issue in American politics. No matter who wins, either candidate will prepare for the post-Iraq era, when U.S. military presence will decrease. At the same time, both McCain and Obama agree on urgently sending more troops to Afghanistan to cope with the growing Taliban threat.

While both candidates oppose Iran's nuclear ambitions, they differ on the methods to foil them. McCain is reported to have told Israeli politicians that he won't wait until Iran produces a bomb, and then try to deter President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad from using it. He said that he would risk a military action to destroy Iran's nuclear facilities, rather than "live" with an Iranian nuclear bomb.

Both Obama and McCain have publicly pledged to be personally engaged in this subject. They recognize that [George W. Bush]'s "Annapolis process" has failed. Hence, the new president, together with other members of the Quartet -- the U.S., UN, Europe and Russia -- will have to find a new formula to revive the peace process.
