Summary


One-third of Canadians are willing to put up with digestive problems such as heartburn, diarrhea, cramps and gas for the guilty pleasure of a burger and fries or a slice of cake and ice cream.

"What distresses me is that for a third of the population they are experiencing either heartburn or diarrhea on a weekly basis, and both of those can have some real, physiological consequences," she said. "People accept what happens for them as normal but really their body is trying to send them a message that there's something out of balance."

Indigestion and its associated symptoms can easily be treated with drugstore products such as antacid tablets, but they shouldn't be used as a crutch on a weekly basis, said [Kristen Schiener].
