More Stolen-Auto Chaos

Summary


Three teenagers -- each of them considered "level 4" offenders under the Winnipeg Auto Theft Suppression Strategy (WATSS) -- are back in custody following an incident early Friday morning in a Fife Street parking lot.

Officers in the stolen auto unit have long said that these teens' involvement in WATSS has shown that when they're in custody, auto theft rates drop like a stone.

As Winnipeg's problem worsens, there's been little movement by the federal government to change the YCJA and give Manitoba what it's long been asking for: namely the treatment of auto theft as a violent offence instead of a property crime.
