More Than Merlot

Summary

Poor old Taurino has been around forever, but I don't think it's ever sold very well in Manitoba. This blend of Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera -- indigenous Italian grapes -- is nearly six years old, meaning the colour has faded from bright purple to light brick. The nose offers smoked meat, licorice and tomato aromas, while the soft palate provides medium smoky caramel and blueberry flavours. The wine tasted best immediately after being opened (and with a marinara pasta dish); by the time I tried it the next day (with pizza) it was already fading, and had died by day three. Drink up.

Malbec is to Argentina what Pinot Noir is to Burgundy -- the defining grape of the wine industry. That's not to say the two taste anything alike -- aromas of perfume, blackberry and toffee dominate the nose of this very reasonably priced, full-bodied Argentine red. It's big and assertive on the palate, but never overwhelms you with sweetness, acidity, pepper or tannin. I recently did a blind tasting of Malbec; all judges were told was that the 15 glasses in front of us were Malbec under $25. The [Pascual Toso] was my favourite, even beating out its big brother, the Reserve.
