Summary
The Brandon Regional Health Authority's lack of foresight regarding nursing mothers of hospitalized premature babies is possibly due to a lack of understanding in regards to the benefits of breast milk and how it is made and delivered. Treating the mother as a separate entity by discharging her before her nursing baby not only challenges the new mom to persevere and continue nursing despite all the stressful barriers with which she is faced - no place to sleep and no access to regular, proper nutrition and hydration - but separating her and the milk she produces from her baby will have negative effects on that baby's development and possibly delay his discharge from the hospital.
