Summary
The area that is now Carman had its start in 1870 when settlers followed the Missouri trail to locate around the meandering Boyne River. The first pioneers were Samuel Kennedy and Ryer Olson, of Scottish and Irish descent. In 1905 Carman was officially incorporated as a town and named for the Reverend Albert Carman, a Methodist Episcopal bishop.
Carman is the hometown of former NHL goalie Eddie "The Eagle" Belfour, and the birthplace of Jack Carson, a movie star from the '40s and '50s best known for his role in the film Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Perhaps Carman's most infamous resident wasn't a person at all, but rather an extraterrestrial being. "Charlie Redstar" was the name given to a UFO sighted near Carman in the mid 1970s. It was described as a red fireball; sometimes stationary and sometimes speeding off rapidly. Similar fireballs were also dubbed Charlie's friends and cousins and during this time there were reports of flying saucers that were often described as playful, friendly, or mischievous. The sightings garnered worldwide attention, and in the summer of 1975 folks poured into the Carman area hoping to get a closer look at this unexplained phenomenon. In a magic moment, Colin Zimmerman from the Riff Raff club helped a local guy in an antique Model A Ford. After the guys tried push starting the old Ford to break the starter loose, Colin wisely surmised that the starter would have to be removed and with the tools he had in the trunk of his car he had the guy on his way in less than an hour. Later in the evening we headed over to Buddy's Drive Inn on the main drag in Carman with the Riff Raff crew and enjoyed burgers, fries and ice-cream. It was without question one of the most enjoyable weekends of the summer for us.See the full content of this document
