Mysterious Fungus Killing Scores of Bats

Summary


Scores of North American bats are being killed by something called White-nose Syndrome, where hibernating bats are found with a mysterious white fungus growing on their faces and wing membranes. The bats eventually starve to death before they awake from hibernation. The fungus kills 75 to 80 per cent of bats in a cave, and sometimes the devastation is total. "Some people have walked into caves of 20,000 bats and they're all dead," said [Craig Willis].
