The Overland's diesel yielded an excellent week-long test average of 10.8 litres per 100 kilometres, which meant it had a driving range of more than 750 km on a tank of fuel. Without turning to a hybrid, most of which cannot pull the skin off a rice pudding, it is all but impossible to find a mid-size SUV that delivers anywhere near the same blend of towing capacity and fuel economy (the Hemi's average is around 16 L/100 km).

Inside, the Overland is all about elegance and opulence. The new instrument panel, seats, steering wheel and door panels are a cut above those in last year's model. There's also a full quotient of desirable toys -- everything from heated leather seats, a 115-volt outlet and power-adjustable pedals to Jeep's MyGIG infotainment system. The latter comes with the usual AM/FM/CD/MP3/satellite modes, as well as a 20-gigabyte hard drive that holds the navigation system's information and stores music. It's a great-sounding system that's a cinch to use. The navigation system's 6.5-inch touchscreen also displays a rear view whenever reverse is selected. It is needed, as the view to the back is both long and cluttered with headrests.

Few vehicles deliver as much on-road civility and off-road ability as the Grand Cherokee. Option up to the Overland, take the diesel engine and you have a vehicle that is as strong as it is frugal. According to the fuel consumption guide, the Grand's diesel engine consumes 622 fewer litres of fuel per year than the 5.7L Hemi. This means the diesel's $1,500 premium is quickly recouped.
