Not only was the national zeitgeist shifting towards a more independent role for Canada in the world at that time, but the old flag was also causing some practical problems. Prime Minister Lester Pearson correctly realized this would present an ongoing problem for Canada and its international relations unless the country developed a distinctive symbol of its own.
