Northern companies win safety awards.

A pair of Northern Ontario companies has been recognized by Workplace Safety North (WSN) for leading the way in health and safety practices.

Kidd Operations-A Glencore Company, of Timmins, and Fleming's Trucking and Logging Inc., of Richards Landing near Sault Ste. Marie, picked up three of the four President's Awards.

Kidd was recognized for mining, while Fleming was a double recipient, receiving accolades in the forestry and small firms categories. ACCO Brands Canada Inc. of Mississauga was recognized in the paper, printing and converting category. Each year, Workplace Safety North (WSN) --Ontario's occupational health and safety association for forestry, mining, and paper, printing, and converting sectors--recognizes Ontario workplaces that have a strong safety culture.

"It's important to recognize the efforts of workplaces that make health and safety a priority," said Candys Ballanger-Michaud, WSN's president and CEO, in a statement.

"They lead the way and set the tone for their sectors. That's why these businesses deserve special recognition, for demonstrating their strong commitment to ensuring that every worker goes home safe and healthy each day. The award winners are positive role models for Ontario businesses to make workplace health and safety an integral part of every job and every work day."

Earlier this year, 18 companies received a Workplace Excellence Award recognizing workplace excellence in health and safety.
