Summary

"They're a working breed," said British Columbia breeder Sue Hopkins. "They were bred to do a day's work on the boats with the Portuguese fishermen."

U.S. President Barack Obama gave the breed a burst of publicity after choosing a Portuguese water dog as a pet for his daughters Sasha and Malia, in part because Malia's allergies wouldn't flare up with the breed's hypoallergenic, non-shedding coat.

There are no Manitoba breeders registered with the Portuguese Water Dog Club of Canada (PWDCC), which lists them online at www.pwdcc.org. Winnipeg Humane Society spokeswoman Aileen White said the society has never had a Portuguese water dog brought into the shelter.
