U.S. President Barack Obama gave the breed a burst of publicity after choosing a Portuguese water dog as a pet for his daughters Sasha and Malia, in part because Malia's allergies wouldn't flare up with the breed's hypoallergenic, non-shedding coat.There are no Manitoba breeders registered with the Portuguese Water Dog Club of Canada (PWDCC), which lists them online at www.pwdcc.org.
