[Susan Helenchilde] -- who has been designated Winnipeg's special community prosecutor tasked with taking on so-called "nuisance" and high volume crimes -- said it's high time the courts started treating police assaults more seriously.

The Crown was actually seeking up to 18 months behind bars for [Mary Courchene], calling her a "continuing danger to society" based on her endless record, which also includes more than two dozen breaches of court orders.

[Richard Chartier] called Courchene "a sad soul" and gave her two more months in addition to her time in custody. He said a strong message must be sent to her and others that similar conduct won't be tolerated by the courts.
