"The thing that sets Oakmont apart from the other venues are the putting greens and greens complexes -- and ladies and gentlemen: these greens are scary," Jim Hyler, chairman of the USGA championship committee, said Wednesday, in the annual stuffed-shirts'-and-blazers' address to a disbelieving media.

Oakmont, shorn of its trees since the last time the Open was here in 1994, is visually remarkably like Shinnecock, albeit greener, and it is supposed to remain that way all week, now that the USGA has adopted what it calls the "U.S. Open setup philosophy" -- which, briefly stated, goes as follows: "Not like Shinnecock."

"This one does make Winged Foot look rather pleasant, I would say," said Ireland's Padraig Harrington. "And you know, 5-over won at Winged Foot. I would take four 72s. I wouldn't necessarily put my house on 8-over winning, but I certainly think it's got a chance. And if somebody goes out and shoots 66 the first day, God help the rest of us. But I don't see that happening.
