"The nurses were available for the diabetics to talk about diabetes management," said [Donald Bear]. "These tests were really good because people could see, even if they didn't have diabetes, they could be more aware of what their blood sugar levels are and what they are and what they mean, and I think that's really important for our Aboriginal population to be aware of."

"I think the thing that's unique is the way that the community is coming together to show concern for diabetes," said Bear. "The unique part about this fair is that it was an initiative of the community diabetes outreach project. This project is a partnership between the Saskatoon Community Clinic, Saskatoon Health Region, Kinistin Salteaux First Nation, the Central Urban Métis Federation, Inc., The Student Wellness initiative towards community health and the White Buffalo Youth Lodge. All of these partners came together to make this happen for the Aboriginal community so that these types of events can occur and that people can get screened for diabetes and can have more information about it and its prevalence in the Aboriginal population."
