Unlike most of us, the Dakshinamurti siblings don't compartmentalize their waking hours into "day job" and "hobbies."

"So there you have the fiery masculine and the watery feminine," says [Shyamala]. "The things you can control and the things you can't. Jewels are the portal through which the two forces are connected."

The Dakshinamurtis spent eight years training under a Toronto teacher to earn their "arangetram," or graduation, in Bharatanatyam dance. The term, which means "entering the stage," refers to the point when a dancer crosses the threshold from student to professional artist.
