IN an exhibit that looks at the grotesque, the uncomfortable, the dark side of the banal and everyday, it's interesting that the curator would take the approach of not actually labelling any of the works, either with the artist's name or the work's title.
It's interesting because each of these two young women -- local artist Elaine Stocki, who's currently studying at Yale, and New York artist Sarah Small -- takes photographs that force the viewer into an uncomfortable position of trying to decipher something, anything at all, about the works. In each case, we see something like the "decisive moment" of French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson, in which the image captures the most intense or significant point of an event. With these two, we're shown a decisive moment of some sort, but we don't know exactly what it is.See the full content of this document
