I Would Pick Cerilli - Maybe - in Civic Elction

Summary

[Kaj Hasselriis] -- smartly dressed in a pinstriped dress shirt, pinstriped dress pants, and brown dress shoes -- was a smooth talker and carefully avoided mic-hogging. Weeks earlier he and I had a lunch during which I attempted to persuade him of the anti-urban, pro-sprawl qualities of the much-hyped bus rapid transit plan. "Let's just build Phase One to the U of M and see what happens," he insisted. At the [William Whyte] debate he hadn't changed his mind. He offered his solution to the sprawl dilemma: lot fees of $3,000 to $5,000 levied onto each lot in new residential subdivisions. This last idea [Marianne Cerilli] quickly dismissed, observing it would drive out development further -- into municipalities peripheral to Winnipeg.

[Ron Pollock]'s attire -- jeans, sneakers, a white sweatshirt and white Blue Bombers ball cap worn with spectacles -- did not impress, but one of his specific ideas did. He proposed lowering bus fares to $1, which he reckons will lead to little revenue loss as ridership will subsequently double. His platform, he admitted, was based around sports -- that is, moving an NHL team into the MTS Centre. When, however, he explained how he would do that, things got cloudy. When it comes to hockey, Pollock wants Winnipeg to be major league; when it comes to infrastructure he's happy to see us stuck in the minors. Like many a curmudgeon, Pollock thinks we "can't afford" even bus rapid transit, so it's safe to say a subway is out of the question.

For the unfamiliar, Willi...
