So, who does that leave? French Canadians, notably Franco-Manitobans, conceivably could demand an apology for the denial of their language rights in the past and even for general discrimination, but they seem fairly content and there's no indication they intend to rattle any old bones at this time. Irish Catholics, who weren't well treated by the British establishment in Canada, don't care or don't remember what it was like to be a Patrick O'Malley at the turn of the century. The Poles could complain about the bad jokes, but then so could the Newfies. German-Canadians imprisoned during the Second World War because of their Hitler sympathies (they used to fly the swastika in Winnipeg at their brown-shirted rallies) are technically entitled, but it's unlikely they'll speak up anytime soon. Homosexuals are also an aggrieved group, but there's no sign they intend to lobby Ottawa to acknowledge the sins of the past. Women have some legitimate beefs, but how can we apologize to half the nation?
Older Manitobans will remember that Jews were blocked from acquiring property in some beach resorts, where signs saying No Jews or Dogs were displayed prominently. Jews were refused entry into places like the Manitoba Club, which is still a sore point for some older Jews who decline invitations to attend events at the old establishment hangout. Jews were ridiculed in public, roughed up on the way home from school and demonized in hideous ways.Picking and Choosing Among Our Historic Wrongs
