"Some of ([Peter Quanz]'s) peers say, 'It's so old-fashioned,'" says [Andre Lewis]. "But it's using the past as a springboard to the future."

"Absolutely," says Quanz. "What it's asking the dancers to do is very extreme in the way they bend, in the speed they have to undertake, and the co-ordination they have to have. It's a very contemporary piece. I know people could say, 'It looks like Balanchine,' or 'It looks like classical ballet,' but it's working within a tradition to reinvent it from the inside out.

"I don't think being extreme means you have to thrash. Companies are going back to saying, 'We can make new classical ballet. We don't have to throw away this art form and just roll on the floor.'"
