Police Cars Finally Get Immobilizers

Summary

Here are the latest stats from Manitoba Public Insurance and police. The difference is due to MPI handling only thefts of registered vehicles; city police record all vehicle thefts:

* 1,607: the total number of thefts in Winnipeg in the first quarter of 2007. (MPI says this is the lowest first quarter since 2003, when 1,491 total thefts were recorded in Winnipeg).

* Attempted thefts are up 43 per cent for the first three months of 2007 in Winnipeg, according to CrimeStat, although the numbers now appear to be declining. (But MPI says attempted thefts are only up only 19.3 per cent as attempted thefts measured by police later turn out to be only car break-ins).
