"We're always in stealth mode, we're so quiet," Const. Clyde Raven said. "The bad guys are looking around for police in cruiser cars. They don't anticipate police pulling up on a bicycle."

Const. Rick Maiers said at the beginning of a shift unit members will be told where CrimeStat has shown recent crime trends, such as residential break-ins in Wolseley and the West End.

CrimeStat was launched by Mayor Sam Katz and police Chief Jack Ewatski in February to make police more accountable for crime in Winnipeg, and to make residents more aware of it. It's modelled after similar websites in Canada and the United States.
