Summary


Another, conjuring up the tradition of "Yamato spirit," argued that Japanese people are "polite", "modest", and "diligent" by nature, but that Japan is "losing its identity because of westernization." The student particularly blamed the Japanese government for focusing "on 'individuality' and 'self-expression' in education," in consequence of which Japanese young people were losing their "virtue."

In contrast to this concern, two other students criticized over-conformity. One wrote sadly about being a "good child" as a primary and a junior high school student who "studied hard to get good scores and went to cram school" and the "misgivings" she has about young people today going the same route.
