Summary

Now matter how big our homes get, we still find there's never enough storage space. This is a telling predicament. Why do we hold onto things we'll never use and that basically take up space? Well, we attach a lot of emotional importance on items at times that makes it hard for us to let go. A baby crib, for instance, when the children are moving away to college and you're in your pre-retirement years is not something you're going to need but might be something with such strong sentimental attachment we are loath to get rid of it. Piles of children's artwork clutters the fridge, gifts that are received that really aren't 'us', granny's old rocking chair that is literally too rickety to sit in are all items that might be better tossed out or given away but may be crowding our decor for sentimental reasons.

Then, there's the 'might use it one day' syndrome. I am as guilty as the next person. I recently sorted through my kitchen cupboards and donated a box full of nice dishware pieces that I thought I 'might use one day' but finally realized I never would. Most were new pieces (some gifts) but they were making me nuts because I could no longer fit my everyday dishes in the cupboards without struggle. The simple act of de-cluttering a few cupboards has made my life a little easier. It was hard to let some things go as they were nice items that 'were' very useful but just not in my life. Donating them to charity assuaged any guilt I felt about getting rid of them.
