Hog producers had grown impatient waiting for the details. They are experiencing their third year of falling market prices for hogs and pork products, and new U.S. labelling requirements have cut sharply into the Manitoba market.
Manitoba producers used to export 4.5 million weanling pigs and 1.3 million slaughter pigs to the U.S. each year. The new Country of Origin Labelling requirement in the U.S. saw many U.S. importers slam the door shut on them.It's feared the requirements mean pigs born outside the U.S. will have to be kept separate from U.S.-born animals, which is costly and inefficient.See the full content of this document
