Quality at Takeout Prices

Summary

Certainly, Morgan's little eatery was more in keeping with the marketing motif Volkswagen Canada is trumpeting for its City cars, namely that the automaker is offering quality German engineering at takeout prices. Indeed, the City Golf's retail price of $15,300 is significantly cheaper than Suzuki's new SX4 sedan and more in keeping with the smaller subcompact segment -- Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit, etc. -- that VW is targeting. Even the nominally pricier Jetta version rings up only $16,900.

What's particularly impressive is that neither car seems to suffer overtly for its bargain basement pricing. The Jetta's interior, for instance, is a classy affair, done up in monochromatic black decor with finely assembled panels and plastic bits of a quality usually found on more expensive cars.

Befitting the younger audience VW Canada is targeting, the audio system is nothing short of astounding. Eight speakers in the Golf (six in the Jetta) pound out remarkably clear tunes from the AM/FM/CD audio system that not only plays MP3s, but also has an auxiliary jack for iPods and a USB port for memory sticks. As well, being a larger car than the subcompacts against which it is priced means there is a fair amount of room inside, although there's less rear headroom in the Jetta than in Suzuki's aforementioned SX4.
