Conservative MP Joy Smith (Kildonan-St. Paul) had lobbied on behalf of the Polish family, who had been living in her riding, but said she wouldn't help the Razas because they were living in Liberal MP Anita Neville's riding.

"My mother was afraid. She didn't want us to go," Rubab said. "It was kind of scary and she wasn't sure she wanted to take the step to go to the border."

"Living in a church basement is not the place where you want to be," [Lawyer Ken Zaifman] said. "This is the best possible result under the circumstances."
