Richmont going deep for more gold.

Richmont Mines is starting a deep drilling program at its Island Gold Mine to expand its gold resource near Wawa.

The Toronto gold miner announced it's starting a 23,000-metre-deep directional drill program to expand its resources below its current 1.0-million-ounce gold resource.

In a Sept. 10 release, the company said the program is to follow up on an encouraging single deep hole in 2014 that intersected 19.87 grams per tonne over 3.93 metres at a depth of 1,200 metres.

The drill program will test an area to the east of the main deposit believed to hold significant potential for a high-grade extension.
