"Succession planning is a normal and a necessary process in any family business," said Mary Keith, spokeswoman for J.D. Irving Ltd., which includes the family's forestry holdings.

"For our operations, we're focused on growing our business and serving our customers. It's business as usual."

Irving Oil spokesman Daniel Goodwin said this week the company "has been separately run and managed for decades" and will "continue to grow and evolve."
