As he gave sworn testimony against Jim Driskell, star witness Ray Zanidean repeatedly made statements that were "incomplete, misleading or untrue." This was the finding of the judicial inquiry into Driskell's 1991 wrongful murder conviction.
In a perverse way, not charging Zanidean, and leaving whatever secrets he may still hold buried, is the perfect ending to the Driskell case. This was a profound miscarriage of justice that required the concerted efforts of police and prosecutors in the original investigation and trial. After conviction, several generations of police and prosecutors did their part by thwarting legitimate questions about the conviction, and burying evidence that showed Driskell did not receive a fair trial.Lamentably, Zanidean is just one in a long list of characters who helped put Driskell behind bars for a crime he did not commit: the police who constructed the frame-up, the prosecutors who sustained the case by withholding evidence, and the bureaucrats from Manitoba Justice who reviewed their own files but somehow repeatedly failed to reveal the dirty little secrets about what had been done to Driskell.Sadly Appropriate End to Driskell's Ordeal
