[Allen Harrington], along with pianist David Moroz, lent his considerable virtuosity to Astor Piazzolla's L'Histoire du Tango. Composed in 1986, it traces the development of the tango from its earliest (and simpler) days to its more complex forms.
The moody, jazz-tinged Caf © was a showcase for Harrington's lovely tone and impressive breath control. Night Club 1960 had a decidedly modern feel, with Harrington's upright, purposeful delivery demanding (and getting) our attention. The sweet and sensuous slow section included flutter tonguing and a rarely heard technique -- slapping the keys of the instrument down without blowing into it -- which was intriguingly effective.[Dan Scholz]'s resonant tone was full of texture and movement, while [Gwen Hoebig]'s sweet, singing line acted like a salve after the agitated passages earlier.
