Summary
[Robert J. Sawyer]'s novels aren't hard science fiction by most standards; the focus is on how people use science, rather than how major scientific advances act on people. He's skilled at presenting enough real science, in the case of Wake information theory, to raise questions in the minds of readers, without overwhelming those who hope never again to open a book containing an equation.
As in his other novels, Sawyer works his own opinions into the fabric. That's an author's prerogative, but the lack of subtlety as he scores his points distracts from the flow. It's refreshing to read a book so deliberately Canadian in a genre dominated by Americans, and it's easy to see why Sawyer now routinely wins not only Canadian science fiction prizes but also international accolades.See the full content of this document
