Summary
Perhaps this is where a neat feature in some BMW and Mercedes cars may have an application beyond merely coddling its owners. It's called Rest, and it allows the Bimmer owner to shut off the engine but keep warm air flowing. It does this with an electric pump that keeps coolant flowing through the engine and heater core even though the traditional belt-driven water pump isn't running. Without coolant flowing through the core, it gets cold quickly. After all, its job is to transfer heat from the coolant to the air as quickly as possible. But because the engine has a much greater thermal mass than a heater core, the coolant can keep the core warm for some time, up to 15 minutes, according to BMW.
