With our custom-rebuilt, 390-cubic-inch, Thunderbird V8 engine on the engine stand, all that is left to install is the ignition wires, spark plugs and flywheel, then we can send it over to Canadian Super Shop. Once there, it will be placed on the engine dyno and run for a specified period, usually 20 to 30 minutes, to seat the piston rings and break in the camshaft. The break-in on the dyno can tell you almost immediately if your engine has any assembly problems or if there are any water or oil leaks, or a leaking head gasket. With the engine in the test cell it's easily accessible and correcting any of these issues is much easier than if the engine is installed in the vehicle. Project Starliner may not see its engine for several months and it's nice to know that any bugs have been worked out of it prior to its installation.
