That centre's executive director, Ron Blatz, heard recently about a "forest kindergarten" operating in Scotland: "The kids spend 95 per cent of their time outdoors. That shakes my brain to the core," said Blatz.

"We have to have places where you can play seek and hide," he said. "We can have a base station where you can warm up again -- that's part of the adventure."

Compared to a $140,000-and-up typical playground structure, "The play value is greater. There's more creativity involved," [Pat Wege] said. "A play structure is designed to do one thing, you go up, you go down."
